AED Defibrillator for Shul

How did you come up with the idea?

A few years ago my mother organized a class for parents at the Gan Montessori Preschool to learn about infant CPR and choking First Aid. The class took place in the Chabad of Silver Spring's Shul in Maryland.  The instructor asked the class where the shul's AED was kept, and everyone realized that there was no AED in the building. That was when we understood the importance of having one in the shul.

Why did you want to do this?

Afterward learning this, my mother and I decided that for my bas-mitzvah project,  I should raise money to buy an AED for our shul. An AED is an Automatic Emergency Defibrillator, If a person's heart starts to fibrillate (heart goes into spasms), the device stops the heart, and then waits for it to start again, ensuring that it's working properly. The amazing thing about these AEDs is that they speak to you throughout the whole process so you don't even have to look at the instruction manual.

What was the scope of the project

I raised $2,300 to purchase an AED Defibrillator. My entire family and community contributed enough money in honor of my bas mitzvah in lieu of giving me gifts.

Any special training or instruction given to the participants?

For my bas mitzvah celebration my entire grade got trained in CPR, use of an AED, choking first aid, and basic first aid, for both infants and adults, by the same amazing instructor who first discovered that the shul lacked an AED.

Anything you want to share to inspire others to start a project of their own?

The significance of this training lies in the fact that all of these girls were now going to be babysitting for their siblings' or other children, and needed to be prepared for whatever could happen. At the end of the class we gave everyone a CPR mask and first aid kit.

What did you learn from the project?

A few weeks later, the instructor came back with both adult and infant sized dummies, for my celebration we only used infant sized,  My sister, some friends of mine, a couple neighbors and I got tested, and certified in all the areas above.
